A Trip To Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton Lampung

For nature lovers, I recommend you a trip to Taman Wisata Bumi Kedaton in Lampung. Lampung is one of Indonesia's provinces which is located in the southern Sumatra island. It takes only 45 minutes plane ride from Jakarta. What I like most is the winding road to the area from the heart of the capital Bandar Lampung city. It takes only about 20 minutes from Bandar Lampung and it takes only one and half hour from the airport. The entrance ticket is only US$ 1/person. It has a small zoo, cafes, elephant attraction, campsite, and a river. If you want to come here, I suggest you not to come here alone, because this is some kind like family vacational site. It's hard to reach this place using public transport, so you'd better bring your own vehicle or hire a car. Just check the pictures below and tell me what you think.

Eh, Tanya Kenapa?

  1. Mengapa DPR mengusulkan memperpanjang masa tugas hakim agung hingga 70 tahun ketika Bagir Manan hendak pensiun?
  13. Mengapa tidak diajarkan budaya malu ketika salah di masyarakat kita tapi malah diajarkan budaya mengancam tanpa alasan?
  14. Mengapa kita merasa berhak menilai moralitas orang lain tapi tidak mau moralitas kita dinilai oleh orang lain?
  21. Mengapa Sutanto dianggap berprestasi padahal menangkap para preman berjubah saja tidak berani? Atau tidak bermusuhan?
  22. Mengapa melukai orang dianggap sebagai tindakan terpuji?
  23. Mengapa ada banyak badut politik yang bertebaran? Memangnya Tukul masih kurang lucu?
  24. Mengapa bensin masih didiskon di Indonesia? Mengapa bukan pendidikan dan kesehatan yang didiskon?
  25. Mengapa anak muda zaman sekarang masih punya cita-cita buat mengkorupsi duit negara?
  26. Gimana negara mau maju kalau generasi mudanya korup semua? Kopas muluk lagi.
  27. Gimana gak nyontek wong gurunya ngajarin nyontek...ya kan?
Eh, tanya kenapa?

20 Greatest Male Singers (11-15)

In recent years, I've spent much times reading about music and its history. That's why now I come up with this list of 20 greatest male vocalists in the music recording era. Perhaps some people will argue with me over this list, especially since I made it in the form of charts, but I guess it will open doors of lots of new discussion. I, myself, am not a musician or singer of any sort, but truly I am a music lovers. I have set some criteria in judging who should be put into the list:
  • Vocal ability. A good singer is a singer with a technically good vocal. The greatest singers must be the singers with above average vocal ability.
  • Star quality. You cannot be a greatest singer if you are not a star by yourself. You must have the ability that will make people worship you.
  • Legacy. It's about influence, baby. You are measured by the influence you give to other singers.
  • Fame. Even if you have the greatest vocal of all, it would be useless if nobody knows you.
Without further ado, let's start the countdown:

15. Bing Crosby (1903-1977)
Nickname: The first cool white man in American music
Genre: Pop / Jazz
Most Memorable Recording: White Christmas
Followers: Roy Brown, Eddy Arnold, Red Foley, Floyd Tillman, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, David Allen, Tony Martin, Mike Douglas, The Treniers, Regis Philbin, Tony Alamo, Madeleine Peyroux, Helmut Lotti, The Blue Dahlia, Michael Holliday, Ed Reed
Bing Crosby was, without doubt, the most popular and influential media star of the first half of the 20th century. The undisputed best-selling artist until well into the rock era (with over half a billion records in circulation), the most popular radio star of all time, and the biggest box-office draw of the 1940s, Crosby dominated the entertainment world from the Depression until the mid-'50s, and proved just as influential as he was popular. Unlike the many vocal artists before him, Crosby grew up with radio, and his intimate bedside manner was a style perfectly suited to emphasize the strengths of a medium transmitted directly into the home. He was also helped by the emerging microphone technology: scientists had perfected the electrically amplified recording process scant months before Crosby debuted on record, and in contrast to earlier vocalists, who were forced to strain their voices into the upper register to make an impression on mechanically recorded tracks, Crosby's warm, manly baritone crooned contentedly without a thought of excess.
John Bush
14. Bob Marley (1945-1981)
Nickname: King of Reggae
Genre: Reggae / Ska
Most Memorable Recording: No Woman, No Cry
Followers: Zukie Joseph, Joseph's Quote, Terry Matsuoka, Joe Driscoll, Martin Jondo, Jahir & The Experiment, Elan, K'Naan, Patrice, Bejole, Gentleman, Mana, Tribal Seeds, Slackstring, Matisyahu, Mr. G, Anthem, Clark Slater, Zino & Tommy, Vick Silva, Bedouin Soundclash, Mister Gang, Daniel Lemma, Ras Abijah, Cultura Profetica, Callejeros, Malay, Roger Campo, Los Olvidados, Mito, Chris Opperman, Dispatch, Heavy D, Pepper, The Slip, Chain Gang, Melon Diesel, Jyve V, Max Herre, Wahala, Gondwana, Ras Shiloh, Slightly Stoopid, Rocky Dawuni, Jeb Loy Nichols, Wyclef Jean, Desorden Publico, Julian Marley, Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, Yvad, Sublime, Vanessa Daou, Yasus Afari, Johnny Nash, Peter Tosh, Ziggy Marley, Winston Jarrett, Ben Harper, Trevor Hall, Trey Anastasio, Garnett Silk, Buju Banton, Benjamin Zephaniah, Don Carlos, Henry Kapono, Peps Persson, Châlice, Gilberto Gil, UB40, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dread Zeppelin, Coloured Stone, Bad Brains, Andrew Tosh, Third World, Steel Pulse, The Skatalites, Musical Youth, Pablo Moses, The Meditations, Rita Marley, Israel Vibration, John Holt, Lucky Dube, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Kinsey Report, Arrested Development
Since just about every human on the planet seems to own Legend, it's hardly necessary to describe the King of Reggae's music. Marley's style developed early under the tutelage of Lee Perry, who influenced Marley's phrasing and provided him with Jamaica's tightest backing unit The Upsetters. His voice graced early Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae recordings, accompanied by fellow Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Later Marley utilized female singers in the I-Threes when Peter and Bunny left to pursue solo careers. It took Eric Clapton's chart-topping success with "I Shot the Sheriff" to introduce Marley's music to a wide audience in the U.S., but today his sound is a bona fide international phenomenon. Biting lyrics coated in sugary-sweet melodies made Marley a genuine political force who delivered his messages in upbeat, rhythmic vehicles. His prophetic wails still ring true; his expansive music remains powerful and virtuosic. We're left wondering why we had to lose the Caribbean negus at such a young age.

13. Stevie Wonder (born 1950)
Nickname: (Little) Stevie Wonder
Genre: R&B / Soul / Funk
Most Memorable Recording: You Are The Sunshine of My Life
Followers: DB Clifford, Zukie Joseph, Balancing Act, (S)he, Threshold, Elliott Yamin, Shawn Emanuel, Jahir & The Experiment, Iza Eirado, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jesse David Shepherd-Bates, Nicolay, MoZella, Tyrone Wells, Tyler James, Ann Austin, Donnie Williams, John Legend, Corneille, Lemar, Toby Lightman, Aloe Blacc, Clara Hill, Greg Fine, Lewis Taylor, Ayro, Freddy Trujillo, Souljahz, Glenn Lewis, John Arnold, Remy Shand, Soluna, Lizard McGee, Yesterdays New Quintet, Citizen Cope, Brass Monkey, Matahari, India.Arie, Leroy, Alicia Keys, Norine Braun, Magdalen Hsu-Li, Jaheim, Juanes, Baatin, Musiq (Soulchild), Toploader, The Big DooWopper, Shirley Witherspoon, N.E.R.D., Donnie, Victor Davies, Peter Harper, Marc Dorsey, Kevin Ceballo, Eric Roberson, The Dirtbombs, Triple S, Meja, Four80East, Common, Smokie Norful, Alexia, Sam Salter, Alana Davis, Matthew Kahler, Aqualung, Anthony Hamilton, Donell Jones, Case, Mic Geronimo, Rahsaan Patterson, Raul Midón, Edgardo Cintron, Jamiroquai, Darrell Grant, Speech, Tommy Sims, P.M. Dawn, Kevin Michael, Ziggy Marley, Anthony Kiedis, Maria Howell, Michael Henderson, Corey Glover, Doug E. Fresh, Peter Eldridge, Terence Trent D'Arby, D'Angelo, Leroy Burgess, R. Kelly, Ian Moore, Joe, Omar, Pliers, Yolanda Adams, Dee Dee Wilde, Troy Johnson, Des'ree, Incognito, Deodato, Bobby Watson, Marlena Shaw, Rufus, Lionel Richie, Prince, Living Colour, Junior, Rick James, Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, The Jackson 5, Human Radio, Will Downing, The Brothers Johnson, Frankie Paul, Dennis Brown, Wally Badarou, Deniece Williams, Beastie Boys
Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon and an indisputable genius not only of R&B but popular music in general. Blind virtually since birth, Wonder's heightened awareness of sound helped him create vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition. Nearly everything he recorded bore the stamp of his sunny, joyous positivity; even when he addressed serious racial, social, and spiritual issues (which he did quite often in his prime), or sang about heartbreak and romantic uncertainty, an underlying sense of optimism and hope always seemed to emerge. Much like his inspiration, Ray Charles, Wonder had a voracious appetite for many different kinds of music, and refused to confine himself to any one sound or style. His best records were a richly eclectic brew of soul, funk, rock & roll, sophisticated Broadway/Tin Pan Alley-style pop, jazz, reggae, and African elements -- and they weren't just stylistic exercises; Wonder took it all and forged it into his own personal form of expression. His range helped account for his broad-based appeal, but so did his unique, elastic voice, his peerless melodic facility, his gift for complex arrangements, and his taste for lovely, often sentimental ballads. Additionally, Wonder's pioneering use of synthesizers during the '70s changed the face of R&B; he employed a kaleidoscope of contrasting textures and voices that made him a virtual one-man band, all the while evoking a surprisingly organic warmth. Along with Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes, Wonder brought R&B into the album age, crafting his LPs as cohesive, consistent statements with compositions that often took time to make their point. All of this made Wonder perhaps R&B's greatest individual auteur, rivaled only by Gaye or, in later days, Prince. Originally, Wonder was a child prodigy who started out in the general Motown mold, but he took control of his vision in the '70s, spinning off a series of incredible albums that were as popular as they were acclaimed; most of his reputation rests on these works, which most prominently include Talking Book, Innervisions, and Songs in the Key of Life. His output since then has been inconsistent, marred by excesses of sentimentality and less of the progressive imagination of his best work, but it's hardly lessened the reverence in which he's long been held.
Steve Huey
12. Jackie Wilson (1934-1984)
Nickname: Mr. Excitement
Genre: Rhythm & Blues / Soul / Pop
Most Memorable Recording: "Baby Workout"
Followers: Ryan Shaw, The Sugars, Happy Puppies, The Barons, James Hunter, Howlin' Wilf, Dee Clark, Prince, Ben E. King, Michael Jackson, Rita Coolidge, The Chi-Lites
Jackie Wilson was one of the most important agents of black pop's transition from R&B into soul. In terms of vocal power (especially in the upper register), few could outdo him; he was also an electrifying on-stage showman. He was a consistent hitmaker from the mid-'50s through the early '70s, although never a crossover superstar. His reputation isn't quite on par with Ray Charles, James Brown, or Sam Cooke, however, because his records did not always reflect his artistic genius. Indeed, there is a consensus of sorts among critics that Wilson was something of an underachiever in the studio, due to the sometimes inappropriately pop-based material and arrangements that he used.
Richie Unterberger
11. Johnny Cash (1932-2003)
Nickname: The Man In Black
Genre: Outlaw Country
Most Memorable Recording: I Walk The Line
Followers: Oh, Laura, Cobra Skulls, Angela Easterling, Blue Dust Drifters, Yesterday's Ring, Cody McCarver, The Nightwatchman, Heartland, Hush Hush Revolution, The Weight, Scouts Honor, Texas Lightning, Ghost Buffalo, Strange Rebel Frequency, Tom Brosseau, Amy Millan, Wingdale Community Singers, KT Tunstall, Rumbleseat, Brian Capps, Sons & Daughters, Murder by Death, Richard Brown, Curses!, Baby Dayliner, Buddy Jewell, Cowboy Buddha, Dustin Kensrue, John Guliak, Billy Don Burns, Willis, Sleepy, Weeping Willows, Ike Reilly, Margo & the Marvettes, Gary Pig Gold, Charlie Pangoniak, The Ruiners, Big Boss Sausage, Bastard Sons Of Johnny Cash, Limbeck, Trick Pony, Michel Montecrossa, The Scotch Greens, Josh Ritter, Stompin' Tom Connors, The Almost, Rocky Votolato, Tyler Burkum, Byron Hill, One Riot One Ranger, The Wilkinsons, Mississippi Mudsharks, Jeb Loy Nichols, Steve Von Till, Sherrié Austin, Grace Braun, Jonboy Langford & the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, The Crook Brothers, Eddie Spaghetti, Curt Kirkwood, The Statler Brothers, Damon Bramblett, Orion, The International Submarine Band, Sanford Clark, Uncle Tupelo, Social Distortion, Meat Puppets, John Fogerty, Steve Young, Jeff Steven, Red Sovine, Jo-El Sonnier, C.W. McCall, The Mavericks, Bob Luman, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Horton, Merle Haggard, Dave Dudley, Rodney Crowell, Marty Stuart
Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and his rebellious attitude and simple, direct musical attack shared a lot of similarities with rock. However, there was a deep sense of history -- as he would later illustrate with his series of historical albums -- that kept him forever tied with country. And he was one of country music's biggest stars of the '50s and '60s, scoring well over 100 hit singles.

20 Greatest Male Vocalists (16-20)

  • Fame. Even if you have the greatest vocal of all, it would be useless if nobody knows you.
Without further ado, let's start the countdown:

20. Garth Brooks (born 1962)
Nickname: The Greatest Country Music Superstar
Genre:
Country / Pop / Rock
Most Memorable Recording: "Shameless"
Followers: Jason Michael Carroll, Heartland, Bucky Covington, Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, Marcel, Charlie Allen, Brother Johnson, Colors, Inger Nordström & Her Rhinestone Band, Chad Brock, Keith Urban, Emilio Navaira, Billy Ray Cyrus
Nobody can deny that Garth Brooks changed the face of country music. Some believe he made country more accessible to Top-40 radio listeners by "updating" it, yet many music purists maintain that he simply bastardized country music by dumbing it down enough to cater to the simple tastes of the lowest common denominator of music consumers. Either way, Brooks jumps from his rope-swinging antics of flashy New Country songs to catchy Country Pop disguised as New Traditional country songs. His 1991 album Ropin' The Wind was the very first country album to debut at the top of the pop music charts -- one year after his No Fences went on a mad climb that eventually sold 13 million copies (and counting). Growing up with KISS records next to Merle Haggard LPs in his collection, Brooks was the first to blend the seemingly disparate genres of arena rock and Honky-Tonk. His commercialized vision let country music make sense to a lot of people who once ignored the genre, and it wasn't long before Wall Street investors in suits and ten-gallon Stetsons were among the thousands attending Brooks' concerts in Central Park. Eric Shea
19. Freddie Mercury (1949-1991)
Nickname: The Ultimate
Genre:
Rock

Most Memorable Recording: Bohemian Rhapsody (with Queen)
Followers: Mika, Anny, Sandy & Júnior, Ben Folds Five, Rufus Wainwright, Craig Wedren, Russell Watson, Sebastian Bach, Andrew Wood, Joe Elliott, Gary Cherone, Jeff Buckley, RuPaul, Right Said Fred, Billy Squier, Seal, George Michael, Jellyfish, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Celine Dion, Boy George
Combining theatrics and an outrageously flamboyant stage persona with his fine natural-born talent (he possessed one of the greatest voices in all of music and penned some of pop's most enduring and instantly recognizable compositions), one of rock's greatest all-time entertainers/showmen was unquestionably Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury. Greg Prato

18. Prince (born 1958)
Nickname: The Artist
Genre: Funk / Rock / Soul / Pop / Dance
Most Memorable Recording: Purple Rain
Followers: Squank, Cyndi Seui, Calvin Harris, (S)he, Juvelen, Oh No Ono, Honeycut, Ghostland Observatory, Under the Influence of Giants, Shawn Emanuel, J*Davey, Cheri Dennis, Men, Women & Children, Tigercity, Mika, The Rudds, Clear Static, Suburban Legends, 33Hz, Gym Class Heroes, Kameko, Sa-Ra, Corneille, Spektrum, Teedra Moses, TM Juke, Daniel Bernard Roumain, YahZarah, United State of Electronica, PlantLife, Mew, Remy Shand, Mystechs, Bumpus, Earthtone III, Vending Machine, Norine Braun, Martin Solveig, Bilal, Musiq (Soulchild), Mr. Dé, Pop*Star*Kids, Jerome Bolden, Chain Gang, DJ Assault, Extra Virgin, Van Hunt, Avant, Jefferson Denim, Sexual Harrassment, Bob Sinclar, Gooding, Julieta Venegas, Pharrell Williams, Les Rythmes Digitales, Gwen Stefani, Yvette Michele, Missy Elliott, The Boneshakers, Mansun, Anthony Hamilton, Ida, R.J.'s Latest Arrival, Maxwell, Jimi Tenor, Squarepusher, Basement Jaxx, Mic Geronimo, Suga Free, Carl Craig, Marta Sánchez, Pigeonhed, Satchel, Shawn Smith, Tommy Sims, P.M. Dawn, OutKast, Kevin Michael, Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Corey Glover, Sheila E., Terence Trent D'Arby, D'Angelo, Juan Atkins, R. Kelly, The Family, Esham, Bobby Brown, Acosta/Russell, SWV, Carmen Electra, Vanity, Ween, Jamie Principle, Tevin Campbell, Candy Dulfer, World Party, Will to Power, Ralph Tresvant, Soul II Soul, Roachford, Ready for the World, Kevin Paige, Robbie Nevil, George Michael, Martika, Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson, Morris Day, Jane Child, Ingrid Chavez, Cameo, Apollonia, The Afghan Whigs, Mantronix, Kwamé, The Egyptian Lover, Eazy-E, Digital Underground
In this age of musical genre ghetto-ization, Prince stands alone. The Artist can get funky, he can rock up a storm, he can croon a soulful ballad, he can spin out webs of jazz piano, he can hip and he can hop. And he can do it all, often brilliantly. Prince takes chances and often fails -- especially on the (hopefully abandoned) film front -- but every one of his albums is chock full of gems. Prince hasn't sustained the massive popularity he earned in the Purple Rain-crazed '80s, but that seems due more to bad publicity surrounding his tabloid lifestyle than his musical output. He can't hide the fact that he is an odd, fuzzy little man, but genius doesn't come in perfect packages. While legions of Prince's contemporaries crash and burn, he sits in his Minneapolis tower and continues to expand the boundaries of popular music.

17. Ray Charles (1930-2004)
Nickname: Genius
Genre: Soul / Blues
Most Memorable Recording: Georgia On My Mind
Followers: Taylor Hicks, Prakash John, Cowboy Troy, Speer, Laura Burgo, Lisa Meri, The Big DooWopper, Mary Thornton, Meja, Antonella Bucci, Rick Iantosca, Chuck Strong, Ruben Rada, Stevie Wonder, Tommy Tucker, David "Fathead" Newman, Van Morrison, Ron Levy, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Eric Gale, Doyle Bramhall, Johnny Adams, Jamie Foxx, Airto Moreira, Geno Washington, Domenic Troiano, Stone the Crows, Mickey Baker, Dick Wellstood, Joe Williams, Marlena Shaw, Tom Scott, Esther Phillips, Arthur Blythe, Ran Blake, Steve Winwood, Steely Dan, Otis Redding, Zoot Money, Frankie Miller, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, James Ingram, The Honeydrippers, Georgie Fame, The Everly Brothers, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Tyrone Davis, The Spencer Davis Group, Marc Cohn, Joe Cocker, Alex Chilton, James Brown, The Box Tops, Chuck Berry, The Animals, Arthur Alexander, Charlie Rich, Ronnie Milsap, Snooks Eaglin
Heaven and earth battle it out in the music of Ray Charles, who combined gospel with the best of secular music and helped give birth to soul, rock, and hard bop. His early work showed the silky influences of the Nat "King" Cole trio and the piano blues great Charles Brown. Charles combined their sophisticated styles with R&B and gritty gospel to create his signature sound: hard, snappy piano combined with exquisite vocals that fall somewhere between a preacher gone bad and a yearning romantic balladeer. Charles absorbed styles like a sponge: big band jazz, country and pop were all added to his musical arsenal, and he built up a musical empire that kept him in the public eye for decades up until his untimely death, at the age of 73, in June 2004. Just prior to his passing, Charles cut his first duets record with such fans as Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, and Elton John, which illustrates a multi-generational sampling of the artists who list him as a prime influence. An American institution, Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" has even become that state's anthem. If only the other 49 states could be as fortunate.

16. Tupac Shakur (1971-1996)
Nickname: greatest rapper ever
Genre: Rap

Most Memorable Recording: "Dear Mama"
Followers: Soulja Boyz, Hot Dollar, D.O.E., Lyrycyst, Kenn Starr, Charlie Manhattan, Rick Ross, Grafh, Ya Boy, Lil Scrappy, Akon, Archie Eversole, Lil' J, Potluck, T.I., Big Hawk, 2Wice, Toyster, MVP, Laroo, Lil' Flip, Untouchable Young Guns, Papa Seville, Jovishes, Positive D, Dirty White, Trick Daddy, 8Ball, Crooked, 50 Cent, Screwed Up Click, E.S.G., Bootleg, Eminem, Killa Tay, Rasco, Lil' Troy, Sicx, Big Tymers, Silkk the Shocker, C-Murder, The Hot Boys, Mr. Serv-On, B.G., Lil' Keke, Guce, DJ Screw, Marvaless, San Quinn, Juvenile, Clee, A.W.O.L., Master P, Gangsta Pat
One of the most idolized and imitated figures in the rap game, the legacy of Tupac Shakur is truly monumental. The Oakland emcee got his start as a dancer with Digital Underground before making his mark as a top-notch actor and hugely successful solo artist. He released his first album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, followed by starring roles in the films Juice and Poetic Justice. His second album contained the player anthem "I Get Around" and the ode to struggling sisters "Keep Your Head Up." In addition to his rising celebrity status, Tupac also saw numerous run-ins with both sides of the law. In 1994 he released Thug Life, was shot several times in NYC, and was convicted of sexual assault. Me Against The World (1995) debuted at No. 1, while Pac was sitting in jail. Bailed out by Suge Knight, his Death Row premiere All Eyez On Me -- the first hip-hop double album -- featured the hit "California Love" and easily went multiplatinum. On September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot repeatedly in Las Vegas and died six days later. Numerous theories continue to surround his murder; some blame Bad Boy, others think Suge set him up, while legions of believers think he is still alive. Many new albums and compilations have continued his career posthumously, with "Changes" getting massive airplay in 1999. Tupac's murder remains unsolved.

Lillian Russell: The Greatest Star of The 19th Century

Lillian Russell (1860-1922) was perhaps the most well-known celebrity in the 19th century. I put some of her pictures here to describe what beauty was like in that era.

Her Biography (source)
Lillian Russell was one of the brightest stars of late nineteenth-century musical theater. Born Helen Louise Leonard in Clinton, Iowa, Russell initially studied voice in Chicago and New York with the goal of becoming an opera singer. Ultimately, however, she settled on a career on the popular musical stage, and in 1879 she made her New York stage debut in the chorus of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore. About a year later, she came to the attention of theater owner Tony Pastor, who gave her a featured spot in one of his musical variety shows, billing her as an "English ballad singer." By the late 1880s, her statuesque figure, radiance, and clear lyric soprano voice had won her legions of admirers, and over the next decade or so, she reigned supreme as America's favorite star of light opera and musical revues. Describing Russell's impact on her audience, fellow actress Marie Dressler observed, "I can still recall the rush of pure awe that marked her entrance on the stage. Another ingredient was her sense of style, and for many years her gowns and jewels set the standard for elegance in women's fashion.

Throughout much of her career, Russell specialized in operetta, but in 1899, just as her popularity was beginning to wane, she found a new outlet for her talent when she became a featured performer in the variety shows of Joe Weber and Lew Fields. "Come Down, Ma Evenin' Star," from Weber and Fields's 1902 production Twirly-Whirly, became the signature song of Russell's later years and is the only one that she is known to have recorded
